Visual Arts

Art occupies every space in our environment from the clothes we wear to the cars we drive, the furniture we sit on and the buildings that shelter us. Art is part of every photo, film, advertisement, map, presentation, production and marketing campaign. An artist is responsible for the aesthetics of every object from your business logo, toothbrush, food packaging to your computer’s desktop design.

Visual Arts is an elective IEB subject that can be studied from Grade 10 for the National Senior Certificate (‘Matric’) written at the end of Grade 12. It includes theoretical and practical components pertaining to the following IEB criteria:

Conceptualisation: Through the development and realisation of creative ideas and artist research processed in both the theoretic and practical components of the subject.

Making: The practical component of the subject, involving the making, management of process and presentation of art making. Students are exposed to a variety of art media, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed-media and photography.

Visual Culture Studies: The theoretic component of the subject, where visual literacy and the study of different art historical movements and styles are covered. An investigation into concepts related to social systems such as political/historical, economic aspects, globalisations, African identity, Apartheid, gender issues related to femininity and masculinity.
