English

In this century, various modes of communication have exploded into being, yet English is still the most common language used in global interaction; whether it be politically, on the Internet, in business or in entertainment. It is therefore important to be able to speak, read and write it correctly. English, however, is not just a subject; it is a way of life. It involves keeping up to date with current events, watching films, reading books, even being active on social media. Being constantly bombarded with information requires discernment and our students will increasingly be required to sift through information in order to enhance their own studies and career pursuits.

With this in mind, the English department at Dainfern College has very specific aims:

  • To produce students who are able to think critically;
  • To produce students who have a sound general knowledge and are up to date with current affairs;
  • To provide opportunities for students to develop research skills;
  • To encourage students to use technological devices in the creation and presentation of assignments;
  • To envelop students in poetry and literature, and to foster appreciation for both;
  • To produce students who are able to construct an oral or written argument, and substantiate it soundly;
  • To produce students who are able to write well, for whatever purpose and in whatever context; and
  • To provide opportunities for students to practise various verbal skills.

English is the language of instruction at Dainfern College and is a compulsory subject for all students. In Grade 12 they write the National Senior Certificate ‘English Home Language’ paper, which is administered by the Independent Examination Board.

We offer our students support in academic support ‘Growth Point’ periods at the end of each week day and students from foreign countries, for whom English is not their home language, are provided with the opportunity to have TEFL lessons with qualified teachers who charge independently for their lessons.
