Creative Arts

Creative Arts is a combined subject for students in Grades 8 and 9. It comprises the main elements and principles of Dramatic Arts, Music and Visual Arts. Students are introduced to theoretical and practical components of each discipline and encouraged to develop their creative and problem-solving skills.

Drama focuses on scene performances, improvisation and theatre-making using multiple styles and means of expression. Students are encouraged to experience, participate and personally connect in ‘live’ performance, essential for the digital-age young person.

In Music we delve more deeply into the elements of music by discussing tempo, metre, melody, instrumentation, genre and style. Our main focus in class is on making music together, so many lessons are spent in the marimba or djembe room. In Grade 10 students can choose Music as an IEB or EEB (external examinations board) subject.

In Visual Arts students explore drawing, painting and mixed media techniques. Creativity is explored through music and the translation of textural materials through sensory integration. Technical skills are demonstrated through still life observational drawing and mixed media tasks, building the foundation for Visual Arts in Grade 10.

This is an exciting and innovative subject that develops the foundations for further study of the arts in Grades 10-12.
