All students who are studying towards the National Senior Certificate (‘Matric’) are required to study a First Additional Language unless they have been granted official immigrant status. At Dainfern College our High School students choose between Afrikaans and isiZulu. View Language Policy

When asked why he was learning Afrikaans, Nelson Mandela famously replied “If you speak to a man in a language he understands it goes to his head. If you speak to him in his language it goes to his heart.”

IsiZulu is one of the South African languages many people use to communicate with each other daily whether they are doing business, chatting or learning. Learning an indigenous language, such as isiZulu, enables a student to communicate with many people in their own language, thus helping bring about social cohesion and unity in our country. Dainfern College offers isiZulu as a First Additional Language for students from Grade 8 to Grade 12. Students in the isiZulu classroom are taught to appreciate and embrace culturally diverse backgrounds, respect other cultures and how to communicate in real-life situations. IsiZulu is not only an academic subject but enables the students to communicate with those around them.

Technology is utilised to facilitate students’ progress in reading, writing, speaking and listening using Google classroom and social media platforms as an open space upon which to extend language beyond the classroom.

The isiZulu curriculum follows CAPS and IEB requirements for First Additional Languages.
