Advanced Programme Mathematics

Advanced Programme Mathematics (AP Maths) is an optional subject that can be taken in Grades 10-12 as an eighth subject in the National Senior Certificate (‘Matric’). It is the ideal platform for linkages to Mathematics in higher education institutions. Students proceeding to institutions of higher education with AP Maths will be in a strong position to progress effectively in whatever mathematically related discipline they decide to follow, such as mathematics, engineering, technology and the sciences.

AP Maths is an extension and challenge for students who demonstrate a greater than average ability in, or enthusiasm for Mathematics. Students need to have both proven mathematical ability and a sound work ethic in order to make a success of their studies. Organisational skills and an ability to work independently are also vital.

Students start studying AP Maths at Grade 10 level where they are introduced to calculus, advanced algebra, statistics, graph theory and mathematical modelling. In Grades 11 and 12, calculus and algebra and statistics are studied.
