A wonderful lifelong sport for both boys and girls, Tennis is a firm favourite at the College. In addition to interschools fixtures, we also have internal championships and special events in both the High school and the Prep.
We have 11 excellent tennis courts at the College. Coaching is provided by tennis professional Werner Knuppe and his team.
Tennis is growing to be one of the most popular sports in the Senior Prep, with an average of more than 100 students participating each year. We have wonderful facilities, boasting 11 courts in total. Our enthusiastic coaching team, led by Werner Knuppe, allows our players to be as active as possible, resulting in greater development. This is the only Prep School sporting code offered year-round.
Tennis is incorporated unto the Grade 1 and Grade 2 integrated days in both the first and third term, allowing each child to learn the basics of this incredible sport. The coach / player ratio is about 1 to 8 which ensures all players receive individual attention and assistance.
We cater for all levels, from beginners to team players. Team selection is based on the ladder that we run throughout the year. Players are encouraged to challenge for higher places.
We have two senior boys’ teams, one senior girls’ team and an U11 team for both girls and boys. The teams are entered into appropriate leagues, so that the players get worthwhile match experience in both singles and doubles play.
Our internal tournaments include the ‘French Open’ and ‘Wimbledon’ championships as well as the Senior Prep Tennis Championship. All players are invited to enter. The annual Prep School Derby Day is another exciting initiative in which selected players compete against a number of other schools.
Tennis is a game that teaches not only specific skills but also etiquette and teamwork. This is a fantastic sport for all students; it appeals to those who enjoy the competitive side as well as those who are not involved in other team sports.

Team selection for our High School girls’ and boys’ A and B Tennis teams is based on the results of our round-robin challenges, and not on age groups. In addition to the internal College Tennis Champs and InterHouse Tennis, the players participate in derby day tennis competitions and play in the Southern Gauteng High Schools Tennis Leagues. The season highlights are the Junior and Senior InterHigh Tennis Tournaments, which are always keenly contested.
Coaching is provided by Werner Knuppe and his team, with practice days on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Coach Werner also organises and offers early morning training on Fridays.
