Our magnificent hockey facilities which include an Astro pitch and indoor facility, are a contributing factor to the success of our teams.
Our coaching staff are highly competent and passionate about the game of hockey and therefore a tremendous amount of time and effort is contributed to coaching across the board. Julian Hykes, a former South African player, is Director of Hockey Coaching at the College and is involved in coaching from Junior level through to the High School Boys’ 1st Team.
Indoor hockey is also offered at the College, although it is not as yet part of the formal school extramural programme.
Hockey forms part of our Grade 1 and Grade 2 Integrated Day programme which takes place twice a week during the hockey season, thus giving every student the opportunity to learn hockey skills and play hockey on our world-class Astro. These sessions are coached by highly qualified and provincial players.
During the season, we are able to put together four Junior teams for both girls and boys who play weekly league matches against other co-ed independent schools within our league.
Our Seniors are just as competitive and two boys’ and girls’ teams participate in the Independent Co-Ed League. The first teams participate in two pre-season night tournaments.
We are the only school to host both a Junior and Senior Night Hockey Festival during the season which has become a highlight on the calendar for all schools.
A number of our players have represented the District Hockey sides, participating in Inter Provincials during July.
Head of Prep School Hockey
Hockey in the High School is very popular, owing to our magnificent Astro and indoor Hockey facilities as well as the top coaches involved.
We have a junior and a 1st XI girls’ Hockey side. Our girls’ Hockey is becoming increasingly competitive and our 1st XI reached the quarter-finals of the Spar Challenge in 2018.
We have four boys’ teams: U14, U15, the 2nd XI and the 1st XI. The juniors compete in the annual Boden Tournament, while the 1st XI have had considerable success in the Aitken Tournament. They won the Aitken B League in 2017 and competed in the A League in 2018. The jump was challenging and the team will again compete in the B League in 2019, though they are keen to prove their mettle to regain their place in the top league.
The boys’ 1st team coach is former Proteas Hockey player, Julian Hykes.
