Music is an art form that truly influences virtually every physical, intellectual and emotional process. Harmonious music makes plants grow faster: dissonant music stunts and kills them. Music can even change chromosomes. What power has this remarkable art and how lucky we are here at Dainfern College to be able to offer this life-changing art form to our children.
Music is taught in class from Grade 0 to Grade 7 and we offer a range of music extramurals: the Junior Preparatory Choir and Orff in the JP; and the Senior Preparatory Choir, the College Orchestra and the Marimba Group in the SP. In addition, we offer private instruction in the following instruments: cello, clarinet, drums, flute, guitar, harp, keyboard, piano, recorder, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, violin and voice. In fact, if you want to learn “it”, we will find a teacher for you! Click here to contact music staff to arrange private tuition.
The SP Choir and Orchestra, both directed by Mrs van der Ploeg, continue to grow and have performed at numerous events including the Linder Auditorium “Magic of Music Festival” and the “Fourways Mall Schools Expo”.
Our Music Department continues to grow from strength to strength and as in previous years, we have added new, exciting activities to our programme.
We are recognised internationally by two international examining bodies - Trinity Guildhall and Rock School - as a centre for these two institutions. We also enter pupils in the National Eisteddfod and achieve excellent results.
Martin Luther once said: “I always loved music; who so has skill in this art is of a good temperament, fitted for all things. We must teach music in schools; a schoolmaster ought to have skill in music, or I would not regard him.”
Bearing the above quote in mind, Dainfern College is an institution that Martin Luther would have valued greatly, not only for the teachers, who he would have held in high regard, but also for the skills we teach in the Music Department, as they will “fit” all our learners “for all things”, for life.
