Katelyn Marais wins 5 medals at CPISRA World Games

Dainfern College Grade 9 student Katelyn Marais travelled to Spain in the first week of the holidays to participate in the CPISRA (Cerebral Palsy) World Games in Spain. The World Games, held every three years, are the premier international sporting event in the world for people with Cerebral Palsy. What an inspiration each of these athletes is, showing us how truly to make the most of what you have.

Just over 600 of the world’s top CP athletes from 24 countries competed across five different disciplines (Athletics, Swimming, Football, Boccia, Wheelchair Slalom) for the World Games. After a wonderful opening ceremony in Sant Cugat, Spain it was down to business.

Katelyn's mother Debra reports that Katelyn had very close contests against the top CP swimmers from 12 other countries, but it was to be Australia vs England vs South Africa for the podium positions. She said it was amazing to watch as only split seconds divided first and second place in a number of the races, resulting in both teams (normally Australia and South Africa) having to check the time to see who had actually won. Katelyn was awarded bronze in the 100m Back, Silver in the 400m Free, Silver in the 100m Free, Silver in the 100m Fly and Gold in the 50m Free.

What a moment it must have been to watch Katelyn receive her gold medal and have the South African national anthem played in the swimming arena.
