Dainfern College offers First Aid training through Emergency Care Global. Learners have the opportunity to complete both a Level 1 course and a Level 2/3 course. These are accredited courses, and the certificates are registered with the Department of Labour.

Once learners have completed their Level 1 course, they have the option of implementing their skills as members of the First Aid team and of working towards either Service Awards or Colours. Many learners, however, do the courses for their own benefit. These certificates are a superb addition to a learner's CV. For those interested in a medical career, these courses are also an ideal opportunity to complete medical hours which are recognised by universities. Many Engineering and other courses such as Hotel School also now require a First Aid certificate.

Since 2007, at least one certificate in Emergency training (First Aid, Lifesaving or Fire Fighting) has been a requirement in order to apply for any leadership roles. An opportunity for this is given to all Grade 10 learners who complete a basic first aid and CPR course as part of Life Orientation. These learners are then given the opportunity to upgrade this course to a Level 1 certificate.

As a school we are registered with St John's Ambulance and we participate in their further training and competitions. Specialised courses are also made available.

For further information please contact Joanna Blackbeard, Head of First Aid.

In the pictures below Armand Landis, head of First Aid 2010, is shown with the Trophy he won at the St John's InterSchools Competition (Third Place: Senior Theory); our  new First Aid Board with what is hip and happening; and Armand again, this time with the Guinevé Russell trophy for Exceptional Service in First Aid.

High School Outreach PDF Print E-mail

Dainfern College has three cornerstones on which it bases its ethos: Community, Character and Competence. We feel that it is vitally important that learners understand the importance of community and outreach at Dainfern College. Outreach is an essential part of the development of a child. It enhances self-esteem and enables a child to explore the wider world in a safe and healthy way. This encompasses the school motto: "A world of education... an education for the world". We strongly believe that each learner should have the opportunity to develop his or her character, personality and personal potential while serving the community at the same time. Outreach also makes up an important part of the Life Orientation Learning Area and all learners are expected to get involved.

Ms Dube will be coordinating the outreach activities in the High School this year. If you have any concerns or queries please email her. Each learner at Dainfern College is expected to do a minimum of 10 hours of Outreach a year. This can be done through the Outreach programme that runs weekly at the High School or through any other non-profit organisations. If Outreach is done outside of school, a letter confirming the number of hours as well as the activity completed needs to be submitted from the organisation on an official letterhead.

No leadership position can be held at Dainfern College if the minimum number of Outreach hours has not been completed. For example, in Grade 9, to be eligible for the U15 hockey or netball captaincy a student needs to have completed at least 10 hours of Outreach in Grade 8. In Grade 11 a learner will only be eligible to be part of the leadership team if the minimum of 40 hours of Outreach has been completed. Learners who have signed up to do Outreach as an extramural are expected to attend the school Outreach projects weekly and to complete at least five Saturdays per term.

Outreach takes place on the following days:

Tuesday 14h45 – 16h45: Learners go out to Akani, on the outskirts of Diepsloot and assist 650 children with homework or other activities. Learners need to sign up on the lists on the Outreach notice board as transport is sometimes limited.

Thursday 14h30 – 15h30: Outreach takes place in Ms Dube's classroom. If an outing will be taking place the learners will be notified in advance.

Saturdays:

1st Saturday of the month 08h30 – 11h15: Learners go out to Akani and assist with Arts and Crafts or sport. Learners need to sign up in advance in order that transport can be arranged.

All other Saturdays 10h00 – 12h00: African Eagles Saturday School takes place in Mrs Coetzee's class (H109). Twenty boys who belong to the U15 soccer team come in for extra lessons in English and Maths. This involves one-on-one lessons as well as computer-aided training. In summer the boys are also taught how to swim.

Different large projects are also carried out throughout the year. Since 2004 Dainfern College has supported on average 100 vulnerable learners at Itirele-Zenzele High School by providing food hampers to these children twice a month. This is only made possible by the school community who sign up to be donors for this programme. We would like to extend this feeding scheme to include vulnerable children who attend the LEAP school. To make this possible we need more sponsorship. If you are interested in hearing more about this feeding scheme or would like to make a monthly contribution to this scheme please email Mrs C Coetzee for more details or click here to download the Contribution Form.

If you have any questions or queries about Outreach at Dainfern College please email either Mrs C Coetzee or Ms S Dube for more information.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Cheryl Coetzee
