Grade 11 student named Lead SA Youth Hero of the Month

Motheo was interviewed on-air about his remarkable Tea & Coffee Pit Stop – an Outreach initiative that he started by himself. Greg and Lucky surprised Motheo by telling him he had been named the Lead SA Youth Hero for August, an honour that Motheo proudly accepted.

In congratulating Motheo on his Lead SA Youth Hero of the Month award, Mr Matthew Davies, Dainfern College Principal, said “This is a significant achievement, and one that exemplifies our College values of integrity and humanity. Motheo is a wonderful example to his peers and to the greater community, showing that we can all make a difference in the lives of others.”

Motheo explained during the interview that he was inspired after hearing his childhood nanny chatting about the long journey she makes to get to work each day; a journey made harder by the cold and dark of winter. Motheo started handing out cups of coffee and tea, and biscuits, to the domestic workers and gardeners coming in to work at the Dainfern residential estates. Dainfern College noticed his efforts and helped him formalise the project. Today, the Pit Stop is an official Outreach activity, which sees High School students serving at the Pit Stop to meet the requirements of the College leadership programme.

The Dainfern College Foundation donated R10 000 to the cause (for the tea, coffee and biscuits served). And big brands like Spar have also come on board with sponsorships., recognising the value of the Pit Stop.

Motheo has great plans to do more! He would like to see the Pit Stop extended into the summer terms as well. What’s more, he has started work on a new project - the Heartreach Foundation. This new Foundation aims to collect sanitary products for girls, because the average school girl in South Africa will miss almost three years of school, simply because she doesn’t have access to sanitary pads and products. Motheo will launch this new initiative at school soon.
