English Home Language

Not only is the mastery of reading and writing relevant to all subjects that are studied by our learners, we believe that the study of, and appreciation for, poetry and literature enriches their lives as they are able to explore events, historical periods, places,  relationships, customs and cultures vicariously. In this age of digital communication, in a world that is growing ever more complex, we encourage learners to learn to use language with discernment as they apply language skills correctly, appropriately and creatively.

With this in mind, the English Department at Dainfern College has very specific aims:

• To extend learners’ knowledge of, and appreciation for, varied literary genres;
• To enhance the modern learners’ critical response to visual stimulus by exposing them to films, advertisements and cartoons;
• To produce learners who have a sound understanding of the mechanics of the language;
• To produce learners who are able to write both creatively and transactionally;
• To enable learners to apply appropriate register in a given situation;
• To enable learners to speak confidently for a variety of purposes; and
• To encourage learners to read widely and frequently.
