In this century, various modes of communication have exploded into being; yet English is still the most common language used in global interaction; whether it be politically, on the Internet, in business or in entertainment. It is therefore important to be able to speak, read and write it correctly. English, however, is not just a subject; it is a way of life. It involves keeping up to date with current events, watching films, reading books or even Tweeting. Being constantly bombarded with information requires discernment and our learners will increasingly be required to sift information in order to enhance their own studies and career pursuits.

With this in mind, the English Department at Dainfern College has very specific aims:

  • To produce learners who are able to think critically;
  • To produce learners who have a sound general knowledge and are up to date with current affairs;
  • To provide opportunities for learners to develop research skills;
  • To envelop learners in poetry and literature, and to foster appreciation for both;
  • To produce learners who are able to construct an oral or written argument, and substantiate it soundly;
  • To produce learners who are able to write well, for whatever purpose and in whatever context; and
  • To provide opportunities for learners to practise various oral skills.
