“For the things of this world cannot be made known without a knowledge of mathematics.” - Roger Bacon
The Mathematics Department at Dainfern College is committed to enabling learners to achieve their potential in Mathematics, as well as instilling in learners an appreciation of and wonder at the many facets of Mathematics. A problem-solving investigative strategy is employed in order to develop both intuitive and deductive abilities, and teachers in the Department are eager to share their knowledge about and passion for the subject.
It is compulsory for learners to study either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy in Grades 10, 11 and 12. Currently, Grade 12 learners who are studying Mathematics write two compulsory papers (Papers 1 and 2) and one optional paper (Paper 3). Paper 3 work introduces some vital mathematical skills, such as conjecturing, justifying and formal proof. At Dainfern College, we have both the expertise and the time to offer all the requirements to our learners, and our policy is that all learners in all grades study the content required for Paper 3, and will be examined accordingly each year. To omit teaching the concepts in Paper 3 would be to deny our learners a sound educational foundation in their mathematical studies.
Extra help is available to all learners at times stipulated throughout the year, through Academic Support periods and daily Maths Reinforcement. There are 15 sessions of Maths Reinforcement offered each week and learners need to book sessions on a termly basis. All learners are welcome to use Maths Reinforcement sessions when needed, but, at the discretion of the teachers concerned, some learners are placed on Compulsory Maths Reinforcement.
Mathematics requires both conceptual understanding and continued practice. For success in Mathematics, learners are urged to bear in mind the words of Aristotle: "What we have to learn to do, we learn by doing".
