Art is something that occupies every space in our environment from the clothes we wear to the cars we drive, the furniture we sit on and the buildings that shelter us. Art is part of every photo, film, advertisement, map, presentation, production and marketing campaign. An artist is responsible for the aesthetics of every object from your business logo, toothbrush, food packaging to your computers desktop design.

Careers in the arts include: architecture, marketing, advertising, editing, production design, graphic design, interior design, photography, fashion, tourism, education, artist, theatre, film, special effects, animation, curator, restoration, purchasing…

Visual Arts is a holistic subject that involves knowledge, skills, values and attitudes. From Grade 10 through to Matric learners are challenged to develop creative problem-solving skills and analytical writing skills. Learners are introduced to a foundation course in drawing, painting and digital photography. Learners are encouraged to dabble in experimental art and explore contemporary art making.

Visual Arts is a practical subject in which 50% of the marks are awarded for practical work in the discipline of choice, 50% are awarded to Visual Culture Studies. The Visual Culture studies will facilitate a direct link to any visual information, whether from the past or present, as relevant to the individual learner’s learning experience. This broadening field of information aims towards the placement of emphasis in the formulation of personal value judgments and informed opinion by the learner, rather than the mere collection of factual information.
