The NOMADS SA Boys U17 Stroke Play Championship at Pretoria Country Club ended in dramatic fashion with Dainfern College Grade 9 student David Meyers (Central Gauteng) and Xander Basson (Mpumalanga) finishing on the same score. Due to bad light the play-off could not take place and therefore the trophy was shared.
Starting the day with a 4-shot lead David started the day with a 2 over on the first hole and Xander recording a birdie – a 3-shot swing on the first hole. David finished the first nine in 41 which included 2 double drops, 3 bogeys and an eagle at the par 5 fourth. Xander played magnificent golf on the 1st nine to turn in 33, 4 birdies and a single drop shot. The final nine saw Xander take a 5-shot lead with five holes to go but a dramatic 16th hole turned proceedings around. This par 3 playing 213 metres long saw David record a birdie 2 against the 5 of Xander. Both players were tied at this stage but David dropped a shot at the 17th and had a birdie at the 18th against the par finish of Xander. This was an exciting finish.
The team tournament was dominated by the powerful Gauteng North A side (James du Preez, Keegan de Lange, Philip Kruse, Rosswell Sinclair, Ruan Conradie and Tristen Strydom). Mpumalanga finished 2nd, a distant 29 shots behind, with Gauteng North B 3rd, after a count-out with Ekurhuleni.
