There’s nothing quite like a gentle cycle to get Sunday morning off to a good start… at least that’s what the members of Dainfern College Cycle (DFC²) will tell you.
Every weekend for months, students, teachers and parents have been getting up before the crack of dawn to hit the road for a 60km+ training cycle around the Cradle of Humankind in preparation for The BIG One: the 94.7 Cycle Challenge which took place last month.
The second biggest cycling event in South Africa, this years’ ultra-road race around Jo’burg attracted over 28 000 entrants and - aside from the main event - it also included a Mountain Bike Challenge and a Childrens’ Race. Members of the Dainfern College community participated enthusiastically in all events but most visible were the DFC² team who streaked through the streets of Johannesburg in their custom kit (almost, but not quite, overshadowed by their vocal support crew who set up camp at the half-way mark, beneath a prominently-positioned Dainfern College gazebo, and yelled encouragement to everyone who passed by). Of course, the loudest cheers were reserved for the DFC² cyclists who did our school proud. Congratulations to every one of them:
- Jaryd Browne (G11) who embraced the event’s Ride For A Purpose theme and completed TWO laps of the punishing race as a fund-raising initiative for children’s cancer charity, CHOC;
- Nic Stein (G10) who raced in the Juniors’ category;
- Morgan Mocke (G10) who completed both the Mountain and Road Bike Challenges;
- Sammy Stein (G8) and her father, Rob who completed the event on a tandem;
- Teachers Ms Bramley & Mrs Hulme;
- Grade 7 - Mia Bam;
- Grade 8 - Kallen Browne, Alessandro Galinetti, Ben Humphries, Sam Lambson, Michael Moreira, Andrew Sanderson, Mitch Sparrow;
- Grade 9 - Bradley van der Merwe, David Viljoen, Bevan Willoughby;
- Grade 10 - Matt Armstrong, Tom Carruthers, Richard Eltringham, Raquel le Roux, Daniel Moreira, Ashley Sparrow
- Parents - Andrew Armstrong, Hayley Browne, Tony and Geraldine Harris, Mark Eltringham, Jane Fisher, John Fitzsimmons, Rob Galinetti, Garth Humphries, Roger Lambson, Sean and Barbara Mulcahy, Fernando Moreira and Dave Sparrow.
